Brandy Explains How She Disciplines

Brandy of Brandy’s Brood tried the Pearls’ method and found it to have a very negative impact on  their toddler so they gave up spanking and moved towards more gentle discipline.  She tells her story in her post, Ask Brandy: Discipline.  While still using non-corporal punishments, they strive to be gentle and are still on their learning journey. <3

I do feel compelled to mention that she highly recommends Lisa Whelchel’s Creative Corrections.  I do not.  While I’m sure it contains some very good ideas, it also contains some bad ones, including putting a drop of hot sauce on a child’s tongue for lying.

For more information about Creative Corrections, please see psychological torture as ‘creative correction’

Note: Brandy has apparently lost her domain and her entire blog. I am leaving this post up because of the information about Lisa Whelchel.

An additional thought about “hot saucing” and its related practices occurred to me today while I was out grocery shopping with a friend.
My friend has asthma, and nearly had an attack due to the changing temps moving from building to parking lot to car, etc. And I remembered that the first time I ever saw her in the throws of a fullblown asthma attack was when she accidentally bit into a hot pepper in her food…..
It is scary to think that a parent might easily land a child in the emergency room with this kind of treatment. Quite apart from any other considerations, this alone should make it taboo as “potentially life-threatening”!

Someone from Gentle Christian Mothers who also likes this site gave me the link to this article. I’m glad she did 😀

I’ll definitely check out those links you mentioned. Thank you! 😀

I didn’t like that part (or vinegar alternative) either. And I completely skipped over the spanking chapter. We’ve thought off and on about giving up Time Outs too … but I’m honestly not sure what else to do instead.

What do you do for discipline?

Dear Brandy, I am so happy to see you here! <3 Thank you so much for asking. My children are young adults and I parented them very much as you did. I wish I had found the resources I share here when my children were young. That is why I have started sharing Gentle Parenting articles here. There is a treasure trove of information here which I pray you will find helpful. 🙂 You might start with my toobox tag.
