Thank you for all your comments, Kim. As Hermana Linda pointed out, this particular article in this series has to do with crying and the original meaning to crying as it pertains to Proverbs 19:18 which states in the King James Version, and is clearly stated in the beginning of this article, "Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying." As I also clearly state in this article, many Christian pro-spankers like James Dobson, Ted Tripp, Michael Pearl, and others teach parents to spank/hit children so that they cry in a "remorseful cry." And as I quoted, Dobson says to spank/hit the child more if they cry "too long" or in anger. Nobody is "blaming" Dobson, but I state exactly what *he* states in his own book. And many, many people with well-meaning Christian parents have been hurt by Dobson's, and others like him, teachings. But this verse doesn't mean to spank/hit children until they "cry." And it is totally unbiblical to even spank/hit children. And Dobson proudly writes about whipping his dog into submission. That doesn't appear to be displaying the Father's love

I cover every verse you cite in your comments. The rod verses are not intended to be taken literally. Throughout this series, I explain the original Hebrew and Greek meanings of these verses. The Bible wasn't written in English. You claim that all we need is to read the Bible in "English" and all will be clear. That is anything but true. We must study the Bible deeper than that in order to truly understand how God wants us to apply His Holy Word. So many Christians use your handful of verses to justify spanking/hitting children because they don't look into the original Hebrew and Greek meanings. The rod symbolizes authority and discipline (teaching and guiding). In fact, the rod was used to gently guide sheep and only hit predators. You claim that I ignore "countless" (more like 10 or so) verses about child-rearing when in reality I cite hundreds of verses that people seem to ignore when it comes to children such as Matthew 18:1-15 and Galatians 5:22-6:2 and countless others that tell us to treat others with love, grace, mercy, forgiveness, and patience. All of those verses apply to children too, especially since children sin much less and unintentionally than we adults do. Jesus paid for all of our sins! He was sinless but suffered and died for all of us. So, if He paid for our sins, and was without sin, who are we sinners to punish our children who are just learning about everything???

Finally, spanking/hitting a child for being in danger makes NO SENSE. Children fear the source of pain. They can't connect being spanked/hit with staying away from danger. So, we teach them to fear us instead of running TO us and away from danger. We are to teach them about danger and be their safety as God is our safety. When we hurt them, even "lovingly," we teach them that we are not safe. It is up to US to keep children safe until they are capable of understanding danger. Also, God NEVER inflicts pain on us to punish us. He allows natural consequences. God is love! Love should never hurt!

I hope you'll read the rest of my articles and the other wonderful articles that are on this website. I also hope you'll read my book when it comes out this fall. God led you here for a reason. Please open your heart to His Truth. God bless you!

Very true, the Bible does not say that it's is necessary to spank. It also does not say to spank after 3 warnings. It does not mention spanking at all. It does say to beat a young man on the back with a large stick, but thankfully we can understand that this large stick represents Authority and is not meant to actually be inflicted physically. For more info, please see The Rod Study.
Thank you for reading and sharing your comments. What you see in this post is only part 4 of the first section of a 4 section book. Of course, it does not make much sense to read it out of context. Of course, we reference countless verses on other places, both in this book and on the blog. I'm afraid that you'd have to devote many hours to read everything we have referenced, discussed and explained here. This site is devoted to Biblical responses so of course we have read and studied the Bible. We also look up the words in their original meanings (Greek or Hebrew) and look at context of when and to whom it was written. We have done our homework, have you? May God bless you as you continue to study this site.

Sorry one more thing to add. I'm not, nor does the bible believe it's always necessary to "spank" a child for punishment. But why yes, it does physically hurt to sin. The world will hurt your child if it's not done lovingly in the home when called for. A toddler in the street should not receive a spank the first or second warning but after that, it's life or death. By a third offence, a spanking would then be in order. If the child doesn't repeat the offense there is no need. Every child is different.

I stumbled across this blog during some research on child behavior and while I'm sure the original poster has long since moved on to other topics, I am commenting for anyone that may stumble upon this the way I did. I am not a seasoned Christian by any means but speaking the truth in love is something we should all do. I will attempt to keep this brief for the reader. Anyone who believes it is wise to make a child hold in emotion is not expressing the Father's love. The original post however doesn't even bother to reference COUNTLESS verses throughout New and old testament that support biblical discipline, correction, and the rod. Instead choosing to go if on a tangent about the Greek meaning for crying... which is neither here nor there. I'm sorry for your parents complete disregard for biblically sound discipline but that's not the fault of Dr. Dobson. Read the bible. All the answers are in plain text for every reader, even the ones that don't have the Greek and Hebrew translation (really, lol? don't be intimidated by that)

Oh I hate when you write something and it disappears. It has happened to me many times. Thank you for taking the time to rewrite your comment.

I'm so sorry about the passing of your aunt. It is very difficult to lose a loved one. I will pray for comfort for you and your family during this difficult time.

And, yes, I love meeting and have discussions with like minded people when it comes to children. As you can tell, besides Jesus, children really are my passion. I have your email address from all of your comments. I can email you if you'd like when my book is out sometime this fall. I know Hermana Linda will also put an announcement on this website when it comes out.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my work and conversing with me. I have truly enjoyed it. Blessings.

High Steph. I had completed three sizable paragraphs on my last visit here, and then submitted my comment, and it vanished like a puff of smoke. It seems I had inserted the incorrect email address, and I had omitted the expedient of pre-pasting, which would have allowed me to try again. So I abandoned my endeavours, and decided to try at a later date. So, here I am once more, to go on, far to long once again. I'll try and be brief.

It is gratifying that we share the same values in relation to children, and progressive child raring. I have no objection to anyone with a view, other than my own, on the character of mans relationship with nature, expressing it to me with conviction. We all can learn from each other, in different ways, concerning our beliefs, relating to the great questions out there that are daunting, and seem to many to be bereft of an answer. Most non-believers are envious of those who are blessed with firm beliefs, in terms of religion etc.

Whether it was my schooling, or whatever, that turned me away from religion, the important thing is never to close ones mind. We've had a recent death in our family of a close relative - my aunt - and we are finding it very hard to come to terms with the loss. My aunt died on the 10th of May this year. She was one day into her 85th year. She was my late mothers sister. At times like this, ones emotions are in a state of flux, and great uncertainties enter ones mind. However that is life.

Good luck with the book, and please inform me when it is to be in print. I think it is necessary to advance the view that the old ways of child raring, in terms of discipline, are no longer appropriate ( they never were ) And that love combined with firmness, and understanding, are far more beneficial methods than the time honoured ones, that have damaged so many in the past.

Take care Steph.
