Doug Phillips Being Sued By Former Nanny

Doug Phillips stepped down last October after admitting to an inappropriate relationship with a woman.

On March 27, the Christian Post reported that he was threatening his closest friends of conspiring to destroy him.

On April 14, WND reported that Lourdes Torres, Doug Phillips former nanny, was suing him.

Vision Forum denied the allegations on their Facebook wall.

Vision Forum: Peter Bradrick Speaks

Peter Bradrick, once very close to Doug Phillips, has broken his silence. While we still have more questions than answers, this development is very much of interest to those who are following the Vision Forum saga.

Doug Phillips: “Disowns” Former Vision Forum Executive Assistant to President, Peter Bradrick, Calls Him “Destroyer” When Confronted about Sins from Spiritual Sounding Board.  In this post we are told who Peter Bradrick  is and that he has started posting some very interesting posts on Facebook publically.  Read the comments for interesting discussion.

Another interesting Facebook post from Peter Bradrick is one in which he quotes Doug Phillips talking about how real men on the Titanic gave their lives for the women and children and then adds his commentary.

“For one thousand years, this principle has guided Western civilization. Simply stated, that principle is this: the groom dies for the bride, the strong suffer for the weak, and the highest expression of love is to give one’s life for another. The men aboard the Titanic recognized their duty because they had been raised in a culture that implicitly embraced such notions. Only by returning to these foundations can we ever hope to live in a society in which men will make the self-conscious decision to die so that women and children may live. This is the true legacy of the Titanic.” Douglas Phillips

When those who champion “women and children first” hide behind smooth words instead of “suffering for the weak”… When the strong take advantage of the weak, and then turn them out like so much garbage… When the strong seize the lifeboats and leave the weak drowning in the icy water… it leaves no choice for men of God other than to rise up and oppose them when they discover the truth. Woe to those that do not.

There are some interesting responses to that post. [Read more…]

Vision Forum Ministry Closed

Spiritual Sounding Board tells us that The Board of Vision Forum Ministries Announced the Closing of Vision Forum Ministries.  Again, this is the Non Profit Ministry.  It is business as usual at the For Profit side of Vision Forum.

Here are some news stories and blogs about this story.  I will add more as I find them.

The Vision Forum’s Tenets of Biblical Patriarchy, 16-21: Education, Transformation, and Control

Note: This is an edited and collated version of a series of posts that I made at Free Jinger in August 2011.

For much of my life, my encounters with U.S. fundamentalist Christianity were sporadic and bewildering.  I started digging into the roots of the fundamentalist mindset when I became a homeschooler and a Sunday school teacher.  As many of us have discovered, fundamentalism has become prevalent in both fields of endeavor–particularly homeschooling.

Fundamentalism, of course, is not a monolithic entity, but different fundamentalist groups share many common traits.  A particularly disturbing common trait is the fundamentalist use of exegesis.  In short, it stinks.  This incompetence exists right at the foundation: not only in interpretation, but also in basic reading comprehension.  This is a disturbing [Read more…]

The Nicest People

What kind of people start (or join) cults? What is their motivation? Do they do it on purpose or by accident? Do they have any idea that they are involved with a cult? If these questions interest you, you will want to read this post by Cindy of Under Much Grace Hank Hanegraaff and the “Nicest People You Could Ever Hope to Meet” (Understanding Unbalanced and Cultic Christianity and Those Attracted to It) .

Along the same line, Cindy also has a new post discussing Vision Forum.

Meanwhile, I have added the transcript and more info to yesterday’s post.

Wartburg Watch Looks at Vision Forum

Wartburg Watch has posted a series on Vision Forum and Patriarchy which some of you might find interesting.

Homeschooling Hijackers mentions at Doug Phillips, Voddie Baucham and Scott Brown.

Exposing False Teachings

I just found an interesting site, Midwest Christian Outreach devoted to  exposing false teachings.

They have an article about Bill Gothard and ATIdentity.

More on Bill Gothard

Vision Forum and Patriarchy

Speaking of Bill Gothard, some of my newer readers might have missed Greenegem’s post about Scriptural Tofurkey.

Recovering Grace from Bill Gothard

I was not aware that there is a site devoted to Shedding Light On The Teachings of IBLP and ATI (Bill Gothard’s Teachings.)  These sites are popping up faster than I can keep track of them, Praise the Lord.  I don’t have enough categories for all these abusive teachings, just tags, so  I’m happy to have these more organized sites to which to send people and which should pop up on search engines.

Along similar lines, Libby Anne looks at the promises made by No Greater Joy and Vision Forum and analyzes her Patriarchal parents’ inability to trust God with their children, realizing that it all boils down to A Trust Problem.

Two More New Blogs

Here are 2 blogs which I think might be of interest:

Rethinking Vision Forum looks like the place to send anyone who has questions about Vision Forum.  It is all about “Examining the Fallacies of Vision Forum’s ‘Godly’ Family Living.”   Since this blog links to the series to which I used to link in my sidebar, I have replaced that link with this one.

I also just found another blog about escaping from a controlling Christian family, The Eighth And Final Square by QuicksilverQueen. I am seeing a great many of these blogs.  I read these stories with great sadness.  So many parents so sure that they have found the secret of raising perfect children for God.  And then the “perfect” children grow up and leave.  They often consider their childhood a nightmare from which to escape.  They sometimes reject God and Christianity all together, but thankfully, not always.  Many of them (such as this link) are not sure what they believe and are still processing.  It breaks my heart to see that some of them have  become atheists.  I have linked to many such blogs in hopes  that their testimonies may convince parents to avoid the pitfalls into which their parents have fallen.

Memories of a Child Raised by the Pearl Method

No Longer Quivering has started a new story by Libby Anne about her childhood in which she was raised by the Pearl Method.  In part 1 she tells about how her mother almost killed her little sister by strict adherence to the Pearl Method.

Speaking Out Against Patriarchy

Here is Rebecca Diamond’s testimony and explanation of what she has against Patriarchy. Note to the easily offended: she does give this post a PG-13 rating.

And here is an exposé of the dark underbelly of the Father and Daughter Retreat offered by Vision forum. This is not for the faint of heart.

An Exposé of the Courtship & Betrothal Movements

I tended to think that the Patriarchy Movement and the Quiverfull Movement were pretty much the same thing, but I was wrong. The Quiverfull movement falls under Patriarchy or Patriocentric teachings, but not everyone in those movements is Quiverfull. There is also the Courtship and Betrothal Movements which do allow the limiting children, but are still patricentric and authoritarian.   Here are some Courtship and Betrothal Essays which expose the unbiblical and destructive teachings of Jonathan Lindvall.

Here is the link to the page about Bill Gothard.

One thing all of these things do seem to have in common is an affiliation with Vision Forum.

Disclaimer: I have only scanned these pages and have not read them carefully.  These essays are not only very long, they are also very disturbing.  I am posting them because I feel  sure that they will be be of use to someone either as a warning or to help argue against such teachings.

Series about Patriarchy

E. Stephen Burnett has a teaching about the problems with Patriarchy in a 5 part series called, Sins Of The ‘Patriarchs’.  Interesting to me is that with all the words he has written about patriarchy, he never mentions spanking or harsh discipline.  He does mention control, but not the physical aspect (unless I’m misremembering.)  This would make it a good series to share with  pro-spanking people.

He also wrote a book review of Quivering Daughters by Hillary McFarland.

I might as well mention that he also has warnings about Vision Forum on his site.   He is worried about their possible influence on homeschoolers and he shares  that he was homeschooled as a child.  He has a very interesting site and it is well worth checking out.

Series about Vision Forum

Sue Talbert at A Mother’s Heart Blog is writing a very interesting series called Vision Forum, Patriarchy and FLDS, Oh My!

In part 1 she explains how she came to find Vision Forum and read one of their books. She starts describing some objections to their teachings.

In Part 2 she expands on their teachings that women should not go to college or work outside the house (or from the house) and compares that to the FLDS as well as the taliban.

In Part 3 she discusses Bill Gothard and his teachings and how they relate to Vision Forum.

In Part 4 she begins to analyze problems with their teachings. She starts with Clothing / Modesty.

In Part 5 she discusses Reproduction / Quiverfull and the fact that they discourage adoption.

In part 6 she takes a look at their Politics and how they are working to create an Army For God. She also mentions child rearing, perfect obedience of children and wives and the Pearls’ teachings.

In Part 7, She explains Patriarchy and their teachings on Marriage and Wife Only Submission.

In Part 8 she concludes her series by looking at whether the group is Christian or heretical, what draws people to join such a group and her reason for writing the series.

Dolly Mama

Since yesterday’s post was about Patriocentricity and I have this link which mentions Debi Pearl, I might as well share it.  Dolly Mama writes about some parallels she sees between the FLDS movement and the patriocentric movement in Escape, FLDS, and some parallels.
