Spanking To Be Banned in Scotland?

The UK Daily Mail reports that Scottish Parliament is scheduled to discuss an anti-spanking law.

Controversial anti-smacking legislation giving tougher legal protection to children was expected to be detailed in a Scottish Parliament Bill today.

The proposed legislation was set to outlaw the hitting of all children with any implement and the smacking of children under three.

It’ll be interesting to see if more and more people in the US change their opinions about spanking when they see more examples of successful parenting without spanking. Unfortunately, I think change will be extra slow here because of the whole “spanking is my Biblical right and responsibility” philosophy.

I know you’ve focused on combatting that mentality as found in “To Train Up a Child.” Have you heard of a very similar parenting book by Reb Bradley called “Child Training Tips? I’ve been working on reviewing/analyzing it on my blog. my most recent post is about the abusive spanking instructions in the book, and I found it interesting that Reb Bradley made several false claims about the effects of the spanking ban in a couple European countries.

Thank you so much for commenting and for the link. I’ll take a close look at that soon, probably on Monday. The name Reb Bradley sounded familiar so I checked my tags. I mentioned him once here. Have you read that article? I definitely need to read your entire series as well as re-read his article. I am curious as to your thoughts on his article.

I hadn’t seen your post about Reb Bradley, but I have definitely read his Blind Spots article that you mentioned in your post. I wrote it in my introduction post to the “Biblical” parenting series……I have to agree with Melissa’s and Libby Anne’s comments on your post. It’s a very small step in the right direction. But that small step seems to be only directed at parents of teenagers, because unfortunately in his Blind Spots article (which was written in 2006), he said that he still stands behind his past parenting advice (such as his 1995 book “Child Training Tips”).

Thank you. I fast from this topic (and my entire blog) on Sundays, I need to refresh my brain from the oppression. I will look into this more later on today or tomorrow.

That is a great idea….I find for myself that I have to avoid blogging on these topics right before going to bed, otherwise my stress level is way too high.

Also, thanks for linking up to my posts on your site today….I hope people who read it will share their thoughts and experiences.

If you add to this series, please leave me a comment on that post to let me know.

It is no end of creepy to see what this person claims the Bible says, when, in point of fact, it says nothing of the sort.
I have long held to the opinion that there are all too many folks who decide first what they want the Bible to say, & then (possibly) they bother to read it. This, of course, leaves no time for them to listen to the still small voice of the Holy Spirit…
Thanks, I appreciate your work in showing the falsehoods in RB’s book.

Linda, as always, thanks to you as well, for your site.
