More Reactions to the Duggar Situation

There is SO much being written about the Duggars. In an effort to please everyone, I decided to stop posting everything I saw on this blog’s Facebook Page and start posting it on my Facebook Account’s wall.  This way, those who want to see everything I share in real time can friend me and those who rather just see my blog posts can just follow my page.

So, here are the links I have shared since my last blog post.

Allie Jones discovers what I noted when the story first broke: Police Report Reveals the Duggar Discipline Method: “They Have a Rod.”

Jonny Scaramanga reveals that Had Josh Duggar been prosecuted, Duggars would have lost the right to home school.

Joel J. Miller has an article in the Washington Post called, Jesus is quick to forgive, but Josh Duggar’s apology is still disturbing.

Travis Gettys writes about the Duggar mindset, as explained by Vyckie Garrison in Raw Story.

The Risk of Unintended Sexual Abuse Through Spanking

Homeschoolers Anonymous is running a series called, “Hurts Me More Than You,” from which I came across this testimony about the very real and tragic risk of unintended sexual abuse through spanking. If there were no other arguments against spanking, this one would be enough.

Some time ago a pastor and some of his flock came to my facebook page to try to convince me of my “error.” We had a long conversation. By the end of the conversation it was just me and one other person who was shocked and disgusted when I finally brought up the topic of the sexual nature of spankings. I was told that my thinking was perverse and the conversation ended soon after. Here is an excerpt from the end of the conversation. The name has been removed out of respect for privacy.  Please click on the image to make it easier to read.

Vision Forum: Peter Bradrick Speaks

Peter Bradrick, once very close to Doug Phillips, has broken his silence. While we still have more questions than answers, this development is very much of interest to those who are following the Vision Forum saga.

Doug Phillips: “Disowns” Former Vision Forum Executive Assistant to President, Peter Bradrick, Calls Him “Destroyer” When Confronted about Sins from Spiritual Sounding Board.  In this post we are told who Peter Bradrick  is and that he has started posting some very interesting posts on Facebook publically.  Read the comments for interesting discussion.

Another interesting Facebook post from Peter Bradrick is one in which he quotes Doug Phillips talking about how real men on the Titanic gave their lives for the women and children and then adds his commentary.

“For one thousand years, this principle has guided Western civilization. Simply stated, that principle is this: the groom dies for the bride, the strong suffer for the weak, and the highest expression of love is to give one’s life for another. The men aboard the Titanic recognized their duty because they had been raised in a culture that implicitly embraced such notions. Only by returning to these foundations can we ever hope to live in a society in which men will make the self-conscious decision to die so that women and children may live. This is the true legacy of the Titanic.” Douglas Phillips

When those who champion “women and children first” hide behind smooth words instead of “suffering for the weak”… When the strong take advantage of the weak, and then turn them out like so much garbage… When the strong seize the lifeboats and leave the weak drowning in the icy water… it leaves no choice for men of God other than to rise up and oppose them when they discover the truth. Woe to those that do not.

There are some interesting responses to that post. [Read more…]

And When They Become Teenagers? Then What?

Cindy Foster of The Baptist Taliban blog explains why she no longer believes in spanking in, I’m Coming Out!

Along similar lines, Dara Stoltzfus has some interesting things to say about parenting teenagers in Spanking puts the parent in a bad autopilot mode…

And speaking of Dara, she also takes a very good look at the question, Does more spanking = less crime and delinquency?

Fruits Of Not Spanking

Dara Stoltzfus writes about the compassion of a child who was never spanked in Tori Story: More fruit of not spanking/hitting my kids .

Along the same line she writes about the difference between those who have become inured to violence and the child who has never been hit and is therefore shocked by violence in Reacting to violence: “Been there done that”.

Another Facebook Meme Debunked

Dara Stoltzfus is on a roll.  Today’s post confronts another Facebook Meme, My Promise To My Children.

Hana’s Body To Be Exhumed

According to a recent news story in the Skagit Valley Herald, Hana “Williams” will not rest in peace. The court has granted the prosecutors permission to exhume Hana’s body in order to prove her age. This is important because the charge of homicide by abuse only applies to victims under 16 years of age. According to a scanned baptismal certificate on the Remembrance of Hanna Willams Facebook page, Hana was born on March 8, 1997 (1/8/1989 according to the Ethiopian Calendar which is different from ours.) In this same hearing, Larry and Carri Williams pled not guilty to the new charges of manslaughter by domestic violence which I assume was added to the case for back up in just in case prosecutors are unable to prove homicide by abuse.

Linda Thomas has a very good synopsis of the case at MyNorthWest.com.

Also, Q13 Fox Seattle Tacoma also has a write up of the case.

Afraid of a World Run By Adults Who Were Never Spanked?

Have you seen the Facebook meme about being afraid of a world run by adults who were never spanked?  Well, Dara Stoltzfus Imagines such a world.

Looking at Grace

I would like to share 2 things with you about grace.

The first is a post from Gentle Christian Mothers and is an example of one of the reasons a Christian mom decided to not to spank.  You can see more reasons in the rest of that thread.

The other thing I found on Facebook: (scroll down for comments)

I think I would change “Repentant or Not” into “Saved or Not” but I still feel that this gives a good explanation of the difference between Religion and the Gospel.  It is also a good explanation of the difference between the Law and Grace.

And as my friend, Rachel Sullivan-Nightengale, said,

Likewise God directs us to discipline our children–NOT threatening or punishing, which result at best in fear-induced outward compliance–but instead discipling them, gently teaching and helping them learn to do what’s right out of love for God.

We strive to imitate the way our Heavenly Father disciplines us, even as adults. He doesn’t punish us–Jesus took our punishment in full. He does guide us with loving patience at our slowness to learn, time after time.

Praise God for His abundant GRACE! May He help us mirror His grace toward our children.

A tested Biblical methodology for addressing traditions and false teachings in Christianity

Samuel Martin has a new post called,  I was wrong and how I intend to make it right: A tested Biblical methodology for addressing traditions and false teachings in Christianity.

Speaking of Samuel Martin, he is giving away 2 free books.  Here is the info:

Dear friends,

I am delighted to continue endorsing strongly Professor William Webb’s book. I can’t recommend it enough.

Here is where you can get your copy – http://www.ivpress.com/cgi-ivpress/book.pl/toc/code=2761

So, I am pleased to announce that I am giving a copy of this book away. This is the first book I’ve ever given away on my blog and I am pleased that it is this book.

To win this book, all you have to do send me an email (your email address will be kept confidential not to be shared with anyone) with your first and last name to info@biblechild.com answering the following three questions:

1.  I have read your book “Thy Rod and Thy Staff, They Comfort Me: Christians and the Spanking Controversy – YES or NO

2. I have read Professor Webb’s book – YES or NO

3. Pick one of the following:

A. If I don’t win the Webb book, I am planning to buy it.

B. I have already bought the Webb book and plan to give away the book if I win it.

C. I have not yet purchased the book by Prof. Webb.

So that is all there is to it. Except for one other thing.

Admin of Pro-Pearl Facebook Page Has Change of Heart

The admin of one of the To Train Up A Child fan pages has had a change of heart.  She was planning to delete the page, then people said that she should keep it to prevent others from using that name and could use the page to warn people.  Then someone said that the Pearls have copyright for that name and that they were going to report her, so I’m not sure what she is planning to do now.

In case she ends up deleting the page, here is her status from Sunday, Oct 2 11:52 am

Due to a change of heart by the admin, this page will be deleted in 24 hours. I only leave it up that long for this message to be read. I encourage all who genuinely like this page to reconsider and think about your actions. This book is NOT biblical. The older my children get the more I realize that I have failed them by following even a few of the principles encouraged by this book.

This story has also been posted at ChucklesTravels with a screenshot of the Facebook Post.

Monday, Oct 3 at 6:32 pm she posted

I have started the process of deleting the page. It takes 14 days for it to go dark. For now the short version of my change is this. I had already been questioning the methods when one day my son hit me and I “smacked” him back saying “no don’t hit” and he looked at me like I had lost my mind. A 2 year old, smarter than his momma? I think so. Makes ZERO sense any way you look at it.

Her wall has turned into quite the debate board and she is looking for more admins to help her out.  Meanwhile, someone made another fanpage using the same avatar and same name except instead of “To Train Up A Child, by Michael and Debi Pearl” it is “To Train Up A Child – by Michael and Debi Pearl.”  Do you see the difference?  It’s the punctuation.  And that person is calling her an atheist.  It is amazing to me that they equate being against spanking with not believing in God.

Update Oct 6, 2011:

The page has been deleted, which is for the best.

Joshua Skogerboe has a blog post about this called, Here’s To the Steady Decline Of Michael And Debi Pearl’s Influence…
